Divergent: One Choice Can Transform You

Susanna ThompsonBy Susanna ThompsonFebruary 15, 2015No Comments2 Mins Read

Divergent is the 1st installment in the Divergent trilogy – the debut novel of American author Veronica Roth.

The story is set within a dystopian version of Chicago.

The people in this story divide into five factions which are Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor & Dauntless. Every year all the people reaching aged 16 years have to to do an aptitude test which matches them to the faction that they are best for. However upon receiving the results, they are free to decide whether to stay on their current faction or shift to a new one.

On the other hand – those who do not successfully complete initiation become ‘factionless’ and are forced to lead a poverty life on the streets.

The protagonist of this story – Beatrice Prior – a 16 year old, is born into Abnegation family. As she is not naturally selfless, she does not consider herself a member of her faction. As the story goes on, her aptitude test indicates that she fits into three factions which are Abnegation, Erudite & Dauntless. Her tester warns her not to disclose the facts that she becomes divergent. To know what happens next – get your own copy of Divergent!
